Welcome to the home of the Lunar LegoBots. We are a team of 5th graders at Robertsville Middle School in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This is our third year to participate in the MoonBots Challenge. We learned a lot about lunar exploration during the previous two challenges, and gained experience in programming a robot during the past year two years in FLL competitions.  Now we’re ready to further our knowledge in MoonBots 2012!

Oak Ridge has interesting ties to NASA’s space program.  In the 1960s, Oak Ridge scientists conducted experiments to determine how the Earth’s Van Allen radiation belts and the sun’s radiation would affect the astronauts.  They sent bacteria and blood samples into space to see what would happen.

When he landed on the moon in 1969, Neil Armstrong collected moon rocks using scoops that were designed and built in Oak Ridge.  The vaccuum-sealed boxes that the lunar rock samples were stored in were also designed in Oak Ridge, and some of the samples that were brought back to Earth were studied here.

The Lunar LegoBots are proud to carry on Oak Ridge’s tradition of applying our science, technology, engineering and math skills to solving space exploration challenges!
